Morecambe 2 Southport 0: Shrimps take their place in the FA Cup’s third qualifying round draw

Morecambe moved into the next round of this season’s FA Cup.

Two second-half goals saw Morecambe progress into the third qualifying round of the FA Cup as they beat National League North rivals Southport at the Halo Aerospace Stadium, writes DEREK QUINN.

A header from Paul Lewis 10 minutes after half-time and a breakaway finish from Isaac Buckley-Ricketts in added time gave the Shrimps victory on Saturday, although they were indebted to goalkeeper Myles Boney for a string of fine saves.

Morecambe boss Adam Lakeland made two changes from the side that beat Brackley Town a week earlier.

Joe Garner dropped to the bench and Will Smith was rested, with recalls for Cameron Coxe and Ronnie Blois.

The first half was a cagey affair as Southport started off on the front foot with Luke Griffiths firing wide on seven minutes.

In response, Matty Daly went close one minute later as he volleyed Elliot Newby’s pull back just wide.

The teams then shared chances with Liam Hogan volleying over from the edge of the area for Morecambe and Dan Pike forcing Boney into an easy save when he found some space down the right.

The closest either side came to a goal was on 43 minutes when Southport wing-back Dylan Dwyer saw his long-range effort deflected goalwards, forcing Boney into a smart reflex save.

The game came into life on 55 minutes when Lewis produced a fine diving header to convert Jake Cain’s dangerous free-kick.

Southport created a number of chances from there but they could not find a way past Boney.

He produced superb saves to deny Adam Moseley and Teddy Lavelle as the visitors looked to level.

The Shrimps went close to adding to their lead when Cain’s volley was saved by Douglass Lukjanciks before Buckley-Ricketts sealed the win with a cool left-footed finish from just inside the box.
